Constant misplacement of “only” drives me up a wall, but when I mention it to others, they look at me like I’m from another planet.

Example from something I’m reading at work:
“Voters can only participate in one party’s caucus.”

I think, wait, what?
I’m pretty sure they can also volunteer to do check-in, chair the caucus, or just observe if they don’t want to participate, etc.

Of course, what they meant was “Voters can participate in only one party’s caucus”
(they can’t participate in both parties’ caucuses)

English teaching seems to concentrate on description rather than on speaking and writing (fronted adverbials). Personal pronouns are possibly the most important; it sounds completely wrong when the possessive is not used. Sometimes an infinitve can replace a gerund, eg I saw him do it.

Hi, Sam. The sentence certainly could be structured that way, and I think your way is preferable to mine because you keep the verb intact. I was trying to emphasize that the pronoun “which” is plural in *this* sentence but not always.

My preference would be to write it thus: “. . . in this particular sentence, the relative pronoun is plural.”
