This is one of my grammatical pet peeves– the fact that people don’t know to use the possessive before a gerund (generally speaking). My question is this: I have seen many examples of writers’ not following this rule in lauded publications like the New York Times and The New Yorker. It seems like many writers/journalists I admire do not adhere to it and clearly their editors aren’t catching it. It’s getting to the point where the correct way sounds incorrect when you say it aloud. So, I’m just wondering if we’re getting to the point where the rule no longer applies in any practical sense. As in, language changes over time…?

Thankfully no one is grading my writing anymore, so I may do as I please when it comes to writing style and using more complex sentence structures.
